We sit down with the duo as they take the stage in Hong Kong once more, just four months after their last performance in the city

23 Jun 2023
Earlier this year, the beloved Korean band N.Flying held their first concert in Hong Kong in four years, titled “2023 N.Flying LIVE ‘&CON3’ in HONG KONG”. That night, the five members specially performed local band Dear Jane’s “What Happened” as a heartfelt gesture to the Hong Kong audience, wrapping up the concert with a sincere and memorable performance. Just a few months later, vocalists Lee Seung Hyub and Yoo Hwe Seung are back to perform as a duo, choosing Hong Kong as their first stop before heading to Taiwan and Seoul.
N.Flying released the songs “Blue Moon” and “Tree” for your 8th anniversary. Can you share the inspiration behind these creations?
Seung Hyub: Wow, eight years already! Over these eight years, we have spent every moment with our fans, N.Fia, so we wanted to give them a song that belongs to them. The inspiration came from all the wonderful moments shared between N.Fia and N.Flying, which led to the creation of “Blue Moon.”
Hwe Seung: “Tree” and “Blue Moon” came about when Seung Hyub called me urgently, saying, “This is really good! I have some great songs!” So, I went to his studio to discuss them. Both songs are filled with memories of our members enjoying music and happily creating together. In the “Blue Moon” MV, there’s a scene where we did an offline busking session for the first time in three years and interacted with N.Fia. These behind-the-scenes moments left a deep impression on me and are part of the beautiful memories of our 8th anniversary.

N.Flying’s performance of Dear Jane’s “What Happened” back in February was extremely well-received and met with lots of love. Can you share the difficulties and challenges during preparation?
Seung Hyub: The hardest part… we were apprehensive if the audience would understand what we were singing! Although there’s always room for improvement, hearing N.Fia saying we sang very well encouraged us to keep pouring our hearts into our performances.
Hwe Seung: I really put a lot of effort into practising the (Cantonese) pronunciation. During rehearsals, I felt I did pretty well, but during the actual performance, I felt I didn’t reach the level I had during practice, which was a pity. But everyone embraced my shortcomings. Watching the video with the members afterwards, we were all amazed, saying, “We actually did this (cover)!”
It’s been four months since your last visit to Hong Kong. Any places you want to visit this time?
Hwe Seung: This time, Seung Hyub and I are greeting N.Fia with the theme of “Traveler”. and we’re very excited! We’ve prepared many songs and aim to successfully complete our performance in Hong Kong.
Seung Hyub: Last time, I took the Star Ferry and visited the place that used to be a prison or correctional facility, which has now become a tourist spot (Tai Kwun). We had a lot of fun there, took many photos, and ate wonton noodles nearby. I want to visit there again. Since we’re coming as travellers this time, I also want to walk in the woods of Hong Kong and surround myself with the lush nature!

How would you describe your everyday fashion style?
Hwe Seung: I usually go for comfortable clothing, but I’m starting to put more thought into fashion, trying to keep it low-key and not too flashy.
Seung Hyub: I am quite interested in fashion. I prefer a minimalist style that looks effortless.
How do you see the relationship between fashion and the band?
Seung Hyub: I think there’s a strong connection between fashion and the band. When we’re performing, we feel the audience’s vibe, and our outfits play a big role in that. Sometimes, we feel more confident and want to pass that energy to our fans, so our stage outfits are really important. Many world-renowned fashion designers are influenced by bands, so we strive to become their muses and hope our performances are well-loved by everyone.
Hwe Seung: I agree with Seung Hyub. When I think about it carefully, as a member of N.Flying, I feel like I can temporarily let go of my usual self on stage. So, I believe music, bands, and fashion are deeply connected.

Looking towards the future, are there any areas outside of music you’d like to challenge yourselves in?
Hwe Seung: I’m currently working hard on the musical Mozart! I hope to present a better version of myself to everyone in the future.
Seung Hyub: I’m also about to star in a TV drama and am diligently preparing for my role. I hope everyone will look forward to this new project!
Lastly, what would you like to say to N.Fia?
Hwe Seung: I’m very happy to visit Hong Kong again after four months and to meet our Hong Kong N.Fia. It feels great!
Seung Hyub: Exactly! Just like Hwe Seung said. Whether overseas or in Hong Kong, we always promise our fans that we’ll meet them soon, and it feels like we really kept that promise this time.
