Leaving PS Plus
PlayStation Plus used to be a subscription service that got you a few free games every month and access to other titles' online features. Needing to come up with something that looked a little more like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation shook things up in 2022 and introduced a tiered PS Plus system. Now there are three options to choose from: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Each tier costs more than the last, but paying more will get you access to more features and a bigger library of games.

A Guide To Every Free Game Available Right Now
From traditional console subscriptions to mobile offerings and PC services, here's every free video game. Because free is good.
Essential is the same as the old PS Plus. The cheapest option which lets you play online and gets you a handful of free games every month. Extra gets you quite a lot more, opening up a library of PS4 and PS5 games you can download and play for the price of your subscription. Last but not least is Premium which includes everything you get with Extra plus access to PlayStation's classics library as well as demos for various new games. Fresh games are added to each tier every month, and below you'll find what you'll get throughout January, regardless of the tier you're subscribed to, as well as links to where you can upgrade your subscription or sign up if you don't currently have PS Plus.
PS Plus Essential

Game | Date Added |
---|---|
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League | January 7, 2025 |
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered | January 7, 2025 |
The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe | January 7, 2025 |
Even if you're only subscribed to Essential, the lowest tier of PS Plus, you'll still get at least three free games included with your subscription every month. Even though they're only available to download for a month, once you've claimed them, they're yours to keep until your subscription lapses. PlayStation has kicked off 2025 with some big Essential additions, one of which isn't even a year old yet.
That game is Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. I won't sugarcoat it - Kill The Justice League hasn't had the first year Rocksteady likely envisioned for it. The regular updates come to an end this month, but that means the version Essential subscribers are getting for free is the complete game. The whole campaign, all of the additional content, and regardless of what you've heard, I promise it's worth your time, particularly when it isn't going to cost you anything extra.
Joining Harley Quinn and the boys on Essential this month are a couple of slightly older games. Need For Speed Hot Pursuit's remaster will also be available to claim from January 7, as will The Stanely Parable: Ultra Deluxe. Another example of PlayStation somehow including something for almost everyone across just three games. If you're reading this on January 6, 2025, or before, it's still not too late to claim It Takes Two and December's other Essential games for free.
PS Plus Extra

Game | Date Added |
---|---|
God Of War Ragnarok | January 21, 2025 |
Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name | January 21, 2025 |
Atlas Fallen: Reign Of Sand | January 21, 2025 |
SD Gundam Battle Alliance | January 21, 2025 |
Sayonara Wild Hearts | January 21, 2025 |
ANNO: Mutationem | January 21, 2025 |
Orcs Must Die 3 | January 21, 2025 |
Citizen Sleeper | January 21, 2025 |
Poker Club | January 21, 2025 |
If you have PS Plus Extra then you gain access to an entire library of PS5 and PS4 games on top of the free Essential offerings given away each month. The key difference is the Extra games stick around for longer than a month, but unlike the Essential games, they're only available to play for as long as they remain in Extra's library, and games come and go from it all the time.
That's demonstrated by the nine new additions to Extra this January, all of which will be added and available to play from January 21, 2025. The biggest addition of the month is God Of War Ragnarok. Not only one of the biggest PlayStation exclusives released during the PS5 era but a title that almost certainly would have won Game of the Year had it not been released during the same year as Elden Ring.
Close behind in terms of hype level for games arriving on Extra this month is The Man Who Erased His Name. The Like A Dragon game that came before Infinite Wealth, and the perfect game to play before the arrival of Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii next month. Speaking of imminent arrivals, Citizen Sleeper also comes to PS Plus just in time for Citizen Sleeper 2.
PS Plus Premium

Game | Date Added |
---|---|
Indiana Jones And The Staff Of Kings | January 21, 2025 |
Medievil 2 | January 21, 2025 |
If you go for PS Plus Premium you get the Essential games every month, access to the Extra library, and also a collection of what PlayStation deems to be premium games. Most of them are older titles that were first released on PlayStation's first three home consoles as well as dome games from the PSP. On top of that, it began to add PlayStation VR2 games to Premium too, usually at a rate of one per month.
Premium's January haul is pretty slim. Suspiciously so with just two new games for those who subscribe to Premium's most expensive tier. Nothing for the PS VR2 players this month, the first time PlayStation has skipped a month since it started adding them to Premium. Just two classic titles from PlayStation's back catalog.
First up is Indiana Jones and The Staff of Kings. Likely being added to Plus in preparation for The Great Circle coming to PS5, although the Xbox-owned game still doesn't have a release date on the rival console. Joining it is Medievil 2, a well-loved PS1 sequel joining the original game which was added to PS Plus last year.

PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus is a subscription service from Sony. It comes in three paid tiers - Essential, Extra, and Premium, and offers free monthly games to own, a catalog of hundreds of games, cloud storage, discounts, and online multiplayer gameplay.

Pure Hold 'Em | January 14, 2025 |
Unfortunately, when new games arrive, others have to leave. Yes, I know there's not a finite amount of room and really, no games should have to leave, but don't complain to me, I don't make the rules. So far, PlayStation has confirmed 11 games will be leaving its Extra and Premium libraries this month. Resident Evil 2's fantastic remake is on its way out, as are the two newest Just Cause games. If you're reading this before January 14, 2025, and you want to play any of the games listed above without having to pay for them, do it now before it's too late. If you're reading this after that date, it's already too late.
